Bond House Projects | Merlin’s Forest | Private View | Friday 24 May | 6 – 9pm
25/05/2013 - 31/05/2013
Magicians, sorcerers, wizards, and practitioners of magic by other titles have
appeared in myths, folktales and literature throughout recorded history; fantasy
draws on this background.
The character of Merlin, possibly an amalgamation of previous historical and
legendary figures, is best known as the wizard featured in the Arthurian legend. He
also is recognised by other terms, including magician, magic-user, sorcerer, witch,
warlock, enchanter, illusionist, diviner, and conjurer. In other words, someone who
uses or practices magic that derives from supernatural or occult sources.
Merlin’s Forest is my vision of his magical creation, including a forest of haunting,
looming yet unreachable backlit trees, a butterfly whose wings are fashioned in tiny
neon pearls, a swan that floats in ice-glass waters, and a snow leopard who prowls
with sureness of foot and eye.
This world unconsciously draws upon our symbolic understanding of forest –
shadowy, mysterious, silently alive and potentially dangerous. But it also is eerily
beautiful, and so we are drawn in to explore its beguiling features, stand holding-ourbreath
still and watch its creatures, and – if we dare – enjoy a delightfully sensuous
experience of sight, sound, colour and texture.
